WHEF exists to ensure that safe, legal abortion and birth control methods are available and financially accessible to all Rhode Island residents.
Since WHEF was founded in 1989, we have provided financial assistance to more than 6,500 Rhode Islanders who otherwise would not have been able to access the reproductive healthcare of their choice.
Rhode Island is one of several states that does not allow Medicaid funds to be used for abortion care - unless the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, or when the life of the patient is at risk.
Without insurance coverage, abortion procedure costs can exceed $500, with increasing costs as a pregnancy progresses. Because not all patients can afford to pay the full cost, WHEF works directly with area clinics to cover the difference.
